After their meal, someone pulled out a soccer ball. Some of the guys ditched their leather jackets and changed into sneakers. They settled into two groups and started a game of soccer.
Others headed into the woods, taking the hiking trail.
Kontra lounged on a picnic bench and called to Mac, beckoning him with his fingers. âThereâs a nice clearing twenty feet up the trail, Marrakesh,â Kontra told him when Mac stopped next to him. The bear shifter lowered his voice, adding, âDo you want help?â
Mac curved his lips into a sly smile. âI think I can figure out how to woo my mate on my own.â
Scoffing, Kontra shook his head. âNot what I meant, and you know it.â
âI do.â Mac chuckled. âBut the look on your face was worth it.â After a second of hesitation, he added, âMaybe. I donât know. Are you telling the others?â
Kontra shook his head. âNot if I can help it,â he replied, sweeping his gaze over the five other humans whoâd been rescued by the gang. âMaybe take Elron and Castor with you. Bet they could help smooth things over.â
Mac focused on Elron, who was actually a fae prince. He had his pointed ears and lavender eyes hidden under a glamour. Elron stood with the other rescued humans, talking and smiling, his arm around Castor. From the looks of things, Elronâs crow shifter mate would rather have been soaring through the air. He kept glancing at the sky.
I totally understand that urge.
Mac didnât indulge his Darwin foxâs need to run nearly often enough. That was something he knew he needed to remedy. Meeting Kontraâs gaze, Mac figured now was as good a time as any to ask.
âIf Deter is willing, could weââ
As if conjured just by saying his name, Deter stopped next to Mac. âEverything okay?â
Mac nodded. âBetter than.â
With his mate so close, Mac had to reach out and grip his hand, soothing his urge to touch, to be close to the other half of his soul. Lifting Deterâs hand, he brought it to his mouth and pressed a kiss to his knuckles, liking the way Deter blushed.
âIâd like to go for a walk with you,â Mac told him softly. âTake some time to get to know each other better. Kontra says thereâs a nice clearing a little ways up the trail.â Seeing Deterâs brows shoot up, Mac realized how suggestive that sound. It was his turn for his cheeks to flush. âUh, I mean... we donât have to do anything but talk. I justââ He snapped his mouth shut as he racked his mind for a way to explain.
Deter lifted his free hand and touched Macâs shoulder. âI know what you meant,â he whispered, peering shyly through his lashes at him. âIâd love a walk.â
Mac bit back a sigh of relief as he nodded. As much as he wanted to be alone on their walk, he knew he had to share his nature with Deter. He wanted to be honest and upfront with his mate.
âDo you mind if I ask Elron and Castor to join us?â
Mac knew heâd surprised Deter.
